Climate protection: "We can do it" - This week a
delegation from the European Parliament's
Environment and Industry committees met members of
the US Congress and other stakeholders in Washington
DC to discuss climate and energy issues with a view
to the International Climate Change Conference in
Copenhagen in December 2009. Today, Thursday, at the
conclusion of the visit, Environment Committee
Chairman Jo Leinen (S&D, DE) made the following

Energy Star: EU Commission and the US
reinforce the energy efficiency standards for
displays -
The
European Commission and the US Environmental
Protection Agency have agreed today to adopt new
ambitious specifications for displays under the
EU-US Energy Star Programme. The new criteria are
effective as of today, and are expected to trigger
about 9 TWh electricity savings during the next five
years in the EU which is
comparable to the annual electricity consumption of
households in Bulgaria.
Energy Star is part of the EU's strategy to better
manage energy demand, contribute to security of
energy supply and mitigate climate change.
“Energy
Star is a good example of successful energy
efficiency cooperation with the US, delivering
concrete energy and CO
2
savings
worldwide, while saving citizens' and enterprises'
money. The new criteria are an important step
towards our energy efficiency and climate protection
targets ", said Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
The new technical specifications for displays (including
monitors) were developed together with EU Member
States, the US Environmental Protection Agency and
stakeholders from around the world. The new criteria
for displays are expected to save about 9 TWh in the
EU alone as a result of purchases over the next
three years. The savings will be achieved over the
lifetime of the products, i.e. over a period of four
to five years. Criteria for new office equipment
categories will be added soon to the EU-US Energy
Star programme.

Se l’unico ricorso che la normativa
nazionale mette a disposizione delle
lavoratrici licenziate durante la
gravidanza non accorda termini di
ricorso adeguati, tale normativa
introduce un trattamento meno favorevole
per ragioni collegate alla gravidanza e
costituisce una discriminazione nei
confronti delle lavoratrici subordinate
Il code du travail lussemburghese
recante attuazione della direttiva
92/85/CEE 1 , vieta il licenziamento di
una lavoratrice subordinata quando essa
si trovi in stato di gravidanza
medicalmente accertato e per un periodo
di dodici settimane successive al parto.
Esso subordina l’azione giudiziaria
della lavoratrice subordinata licenziata
durante la gravidanza ad un termine di
quindici giorni, a decorrere dalla data
della risoluzione del contratto, per
proporre un’azione di nullità del
licenziamento e di reintegrazione
nell’ambito dell’impresa interessata.

La relazione sull' “Eterogeneità della forza lavoro e la valutazione dei rischi: garantire che tutti siano inclusi”, evidenzia la necessità di effettuare valutazioni del rischio inclusive che tengano conto dell'eterogeneità della forza lavoro nella valutazione e la gestione dei rischi. Fornisce esempi interessanti di prevenzione dei rischi nei confronti di lavoratori vulnerabili, quali i lavoratori migranti, i disabili, i lavoratori giovani e anziani, le donne e i lavoratori interinali.

A new Pandemic H1N1 site has been launched by the DG Health and Consumers of the European Commission.
On this site the visitors can access easily the main menu and choose a section of interest. They can also find the latest news from Member States and EU institutions, the most important documents, press releases, videos, information and advices.
In the Member States page the visitors can find an interactive map with all the campaigns and available information materials

EU- Tackling the
increased take-up of
incapacity benefit by young
people in the EU - The
main aim of this Eurofound
workshop was to examine the
rise in the number of young
people claiming disability
benefits. In many EU Member
States, there is increasing
policy concern about the
growing numbers of young
people who are entering
long-term disability schemes.
It appears that the nature
of the illnesses which
qualify people for these
benefits is changing, with
evidence of growing numbers
of people categorised as
disabled due to mental
health problems. Eurofound’s
research into the issue will
feature at an upcoming
high-level conference on
labour market inclusion
hosted by the Swedish
Presidency, on 26–27 October
in Stockholm. Politicians,
experts, researchers and
stakeholders from across the
EU will look at ways of
tackling the issue.

Health and safety in the
woodworking industry
-
This DVD is aimed at managers and supervisors in
the woodworking industry, but will also be useful for training operators, making
them more aware of health and safety risks. In particular, it shows: the
importance of a health and safety strategy for your business; that the majority
of woodworking machinery accidents can be prevented by ensuring operators are
properly trained and supervised; safe working practices, properly guarded
machines and the use of safety devices; the hazards of noise and dust in the
woodworking industry. The information was formerly available as three separate
HSE videos in the "Cutting edge" series that have been combined and updated to
include new guidance, primarily on the risks from wood dust and how to control
them.
