EU – Social partners'
agreement to improve standards for
300,000 maritime workers: proposal
for a new Council Directive -
The European Commission has put
forward a proposal to improve
working conditions for the estimated
300,000 maritime workers across the
EU.
The new legislation is based on an
EU-level agreement by employers and
trade unions in the sector and would
incorporate internationally-agreed
standards. To mark the agreement,
the Social Partners, Commissioner
Špidla and Vice-President Tajani met
for a public event in the Port of
Brussels.
"This agreement will create binding
standards which will strengthen the
internationally-agreed standards at
international, European and local
level," said Commissioner for
Employment & Social Affairs Vladimír
Špidla. "It will improve working
conditions for thousands and create
more and better jobs in the maritime
sector, while reducing social
dumping.

Codes
of conduct and international framework agreements - Case
studies
The aim of this research
was to assess the impact of
codes of conduct and
international framework
agreements (IFAs)
at company level, both from an analytical perspective and from a
practical angle by analysing case studies of good practice.
A series of 10 case studies into companies which have a code of
conduct, an international framework agreement or both tools was
carried out in 2007. Interviews with representatives from management
and employees aimed at investigating the motivations and interest
constellations of both parties and at reporting on the concrete
changes these tools have introduced in the companies. The following
case studies were carried out by a research team in different

Commission's Open Access Pilot for Research Articles: Frequently
Asked Questions
What is open access?
Under open access policies, authors published in research
publications grant free Internet access to their scientific
contributions, as well as the possibility to use them, subject
to proper attribution of authorship[1]. Under open access, a
complete version of the work and supplemental materials should
be deposited in at least one online repository.
In the pilot launched today, open access means free of charge
access for anyone over the internet to research articles
resulting from EU funded research.
Open access is a natural policy approach where research is
publicly funded: the results of research funded with taxpayers'
money should afterwards be disseminated as broadly as possible
and for free to other interested researchers and the public at
large. The Commission's pilot therefore focuses on research
articles resulting from research funded under the EU's 7th
Framework programme for research and development (FP7).

Activities for 2008/09 - The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in partnership with the EEF,
launched the UK’s European Campaign 2008-09 on risk assessment
in London on 24 June 2008. The formal launch of the campaign
signals the start of the European Campaign activities in the UK.
Speakers at the launch event included: The UK Minister for
Safety and Health at Work, Lord McKenzie, who gave a key note
speech; Hugh Robertson (TUC); Gary Booton (EEF) and Tim Tregenza
(European Agency for Safety and Health at Work).
