THE EUROPEAN SATURDAY OF SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK, TRANSPORT SAFETY, FOOD SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

Working time flexibility in European companies - Working time arrangements can have a significant bearing on the efficiency and productivity of companies as well as the health, wellbeing and motivation of their employees. This report provides unique insight into the various working time flexibility arrangements currently in place in companies across Europe. It is based on analysing the findings of a large-scale, representative survey carried out in establishments with 10 or more employees in 21 European countries in 2004-5. The report looks at whether and how countries differ in their application of flexible working time systems. Young people are especially vulnerable in the workplace - Across Europe, 18 to 24-year-olds are at least 50% more likely to be hurt at work than older people. Young people are also more likely to suffer from an occupational illness.
Behind the statistics are individual stories. Young people having to live with the consequences of  accidents and illness. Young people dying who had their whole lives ahead of them.
There are many reasons why young workers are at risk.  But they are all things that
we can do something about. Employers, educators, health and safety professionals, policy makers, and young workers themselves - we all have a responsibility to help keep young people safe and healthy.

Why are young people vulnerable?

New to the job and new to the workplace, young people lack experience, and may not pay enough attention to the risks that they face: 

• they may lack physical and psychological maturity

• they may lack skills and training

• they may be unaware of their employer's duties, and their own rights and responsibilities

• they may lack confidence in speaking out if there's a problem.

For their part, employers may fail to take account of the vulnerability of young people, by providing them with the training, supervision and safeguards that they need, and giving them work that is appropriate for them. more ...

Social protection - In 2004 social protection expenditure accounted for 27.3% of GDP in the European Union. However, the percentage share in one country can be more than double that in another. Expenditure is highest in Sweden (32.9%) and lowest in Latvia (12.6%). Expenditure on old-age and survivors' benefits accounts for a large proportion of social benefits in most countries. Sickness/health care expenditure also increased steadily over the period 2000-2004 in EU-25 (by 3.8% per annum on average). Different countries have markedly different systems for financing social protection, depending on whether they favour social security contributions (59.5% of total receipts at EU-25 level in 2004) or general government funding (37.3%). Guidance for work with nano-materials - The Federal Institution for industrial safety and industrial medicine (BAuA) and the federation of the chemical industry (VCI) in Germany have set up an inquiry during the spring 2006 within chemical enterprises where nano-materials are handled. The objective of this inquiry was it to draw up an overview of the applied safety procedures in the chemical industry involving nano-materials. The "manual for activities with nano-materials at the workplace" should paved the way to recommendations and procedural instructions for handling nano-materials in the chemical industry.
